E2A's community-based program in DRC featured in Frontlines magazine

USAID's July/August issue of Frontlines magazine features E2A's mission-supported community-based family planning program in DRC in its lead story. 

The story focuses on E2A's innovative approach, which uses "outreach events" in public spaces to provide information about contraceptives, contraceptive counseling, and a full range of contraceptive methods. At these events, nurses join community-based distributors to provide support and offer clinical methods, such as injectables and long-acting implants, in a private setting.

Quoted in the story, E2A's Dr. Murtala Mai calls outreach events a "cost-effective means" to offering full contraceptive choice to rural populations.

“Outreach events, where nurses from public health facilities administer long-acting contraceptives, like implants, are one of the most sustainable and cost-effective means of addressing the equity gap to full contraceptive choice in settings like DRC and other developing countries where the policy environment is not yet supportive of task-sharing strategies that move clinical services to the community level,” said Mai.“The innovative coupling of routine community-based distribution with regular outreaches by clinical nurses is already showing promising results in terms of high demand and uptake of contraception.”
