Hosts: E2A and Pathfinder; this is an invite-only technical consultation
This one-and-a-half day, in-person meeting will bring invited technical experts together to “dive in” to the evidence and learning from a range of programs that have applied social norm and behavior change approaches along with service delivery strategies to increase contraceptive use among married youth and first-time parents.
This regional meeting in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso will join governments, civil society, donors, NGOs, regional and international partners, and youth leaders to
examine how we can intensify investments in evidence-based practices—particularly through national Costed Implementation Plans (CIPs) for Family Planning. The meeting will foster knowledge exchange and technical reflections by country teams, and most importantly, support the implementation and scale-up of best practices in youth contraceptive programming.
The meeting will seek to be a venue for:
This webinar series is hosted by the working group advancing the use of the Global Consensus Statement: Expanding Contraceptive Choice for Adolescents and Youth to Include Long-Acting Reversible Contraception
Learn how health providers, professional associations, young people, health systems specialists, researchers, and donors have successfully advocated for and implemented programs that expand method choice to include longacting reversible methods (LARCs) for youth and adolescents through this four-part webinar series.
What are the different programmatic strategies that have been implemented in low- and middle-income countries to expand method choice to include LARCs for sexually active young people? What tools and approaches have been used to address quality of care and provider bias, and measure uptake of LARCs?
Anna Temba of Pathfinder International will share how youth friendly-services were mainstreamed in service delivery points in urban public health facilities to increase uptake of contraceptive services, particularly of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs). The presentation will also cover the role of community health workers in client mobilization, counseling, and collecting clients’ feedback.
Gillian Eva of Marie Stopes International (MSI) will focus on how MSI is meeting youth demand for LARCs through innovative programming. This will include discussion of MSI’s youth strategy, youth voucher program in Madagascar, youth-friendly provider training, and counseling approaches (including a counseling app).

What additional evidence is needed to support implementation of the Global Consensus Statement for expanded method choice at global, regional and national levels?
What are the Global Financing Facility and FP2020 synergistic contributions to improve AYSRH, including expanding method choice for youth?
How has the Global Consensus Statement been successfully used as an advocacy tool for influencing policy and program for expanding method choice to include LARCs for adolescents and youth, and how can it be used as an advocacy tool in the future?

Through its technical support to Kenyatta University in Kenya and implementation of the University Leadership for Change Program at Abdou Moumouni University in Niger, E2A brings attention to the common challenges that hinder these young people’s access to quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services - from student’s limited knowledge and agency when it comes to their SRH and rights, to poorly equipped clinics and service providers unprepared to meet the specific needs of youth, to unsupportive social norms within university settings and home communities. As E2A wraps up its work with these two universities, this webinar provides an opportunity to share the two experiences and illustrate how universities can do more to strengthen and scale up effective YFS models for delivery of SRH programming for students. Presentations and discussions will focus on efforts to improve the service-delivery models at each university, the scale-up of interventions to additional campuses, and evolving model(s) of YFS at universities that could be adapted globally. Countries around the world have made ambitious pledges to work toward universal access to sexual and reproductive health services—which includes quality family planning services that offer women and girls a wide range of contraceptive methods. Those pledges culminated most recently in commitments under the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health. To succeed in these efforts, effective family planning interventions need to move beyond small-scale projects to reach much larger populations by applying systematic approaches to scale-up.
Join us for a rare opportunity to engage with Pathfinder International’s country representatives from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Niger, and Nigeria about how interventions implemented under the E2A Project were systematically designed and implemented in ways that looked ahead to future scale-up. The country representatives will describe how they used E2A’s approach of taking evidence to action to ensure the interventions’ potential for scale. Learning on how the interventions helped to expand contraceptive choice for underserved communities, and in particular reach adolescents and youth, will be highlighted.

More about HoPE: Since 2011, HoPE has been working to model and scale up a promising cross-sectoral approach - known as “population, health and environment”- to address the interrelated challenges faced by marginalized, rural communities in Uganda and Kenya. HoPE addresses food security, unmet need for family planning, environmental degradation, high risk of maternal and infant mortality, water and sanitation, and lack of economic/livelihood opportunities. Please join us for the fourth in a series of technical exchanges on AYSRH topics hosted by E2A and the Youth Health and Rights Coalition.
Although there is growing awareness of the rights-based approach to AYSRH, the majority of adolescents and young people are still denied their right to access comprehensive information and services related to sexuality and sexual and reproductive health and rights. While progress has been made since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, discrimination against young people’s sexuality and inequalities continue to limit the scope, reach and impact of sexual health and rights interventions for young people.
Join us for a discussion on how can we advance an agenda that ensures young people’s access to information and services and entitles them to make autonomous informed choices, while firmly positioning sexuality and sexual health as priorities in policies, programs, and service delivery.

Narrative has been shown to motivate and support health behavior change in a far more engaging and three-dimensional way than informational approaches. Yet the use of narrative for behavior change among young people is often fragmented by the different public health discourses and sub-disciplines of behavior change, narrative/entertainment-education, and AYSRH. Each discipline looks at the topic through its own lens, which has led “narrative + behavior change + youth” to often be less than the sum of its parts. The discussions at this event will address the different storytelling methods and their impacts on behavior change, as well as the best-suited approaches for youth-related sexual and reproductive health problems.
Presentations from specialists in the fields of AYSRH, behavior change, and narrative will examine the theoretical underpinnings and practical implications of addressing youth health needs.

First-time parents (FTP) - broadly defined as young married/in-union women under the age of 25 and their partners who are pregnant or already have one child - form a critical group for health and development practitioners. FTPs have a range of critical reproductive, maternal and child health and other (e.g., education, economic) needs that are inadequately addressed. At the same time, FTPs present a unique opportunity in reaching typically under-served adolescents and young people. Continuing to provide leadership in understanding and responding to the needs of this important group, E2A will convene a small group of experts on adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health and rights to review experience to-date and shape an appropriate package of services or a program model for responding to the specific needs of this population. This convening is intended to be a two-day meeting of thought-leaders who are well steeped in the conceptual and practical grounding for working with youth, including first-time parents.
